Harrods - London, UK

Harrods, the world-renowned department store in London, was established in 1849 by Charles Henry Harrod. Since then, it has become an enduring symbol of sophistication and refinement. More than just a retail destination, Harrods is a cultural icon, drawing visitors from across the globe to experience its exceptional offerings and architectural splendor.

The Harrods building, located in Knightsbridge, is a masterpiece of late-Victorian architecture. Designed by Charles William Stephens in 1905, its terracotta façade and baroque detailing have made it a quintessential London landmark. Lighting has played a pivotal role in accentuating its architectural grandeur, particularly during its formative years. In the early 20th century, Harrods pioneered the use of electric illumination, setting a new standard for architectural lighting. This innovation transformed Harrods into a radiant beacon of luxury, especially at night.

Today, the lighting of Harrods is an ongoing project led by the acclaimed lighting design firm L’Observatoire International in collaboration with GVA Lighting. GVA has supplied products such as Highlighter, FL, STR9, and LIRA, each tailored to meet the specific requirements of the lighting design. These technologies provide cove lighting, façade washing, and wall grazing to precisely accentuate the building’s intricate terracotta details and ornamentation.
The lighting system also supports festive displays and dynamic light shows, transforming Harrods into a glowing centerpiece for celebrations. This seamless integration of historic charm and advanced innovation ensures the building remains captivating at all times.

This project reflects Harrods’, GVA and L’Observatoire International’s commitment to preserving the building’s legacy while embracing cutting-edge lighting solutions, enabling it to shine continuously as a luminous beacon of history and beauty in the heart of London.
