Sherwood Pedestrian Bridge
Sherwood Pedestrian Bridge: Linking Communities Across Highway 99 West
In Sherwood, Oregon, a new pedestrian bridge now stands as both a vital connection and a civic landmark. Designed with ADA-compliant accessibility and public safety in mind, the bridge is distinguished by its sweeping wavy arches and dynamic lighting that reflect Sherwood’s growth and community spirit. It represents not only an engineering and design achievement but also a testament to the city’s collaborative approach to public space.
Linking Communities
The Sherwood Pedestrian Bridge was built elsewhere in modular sections before being transported and assembled on site. This method minimized disruption to local traffic and neighborhoods while ensuring precision in construction. Just as the physical assembly of the bridge involved careful planning, so too did its design process. The project was shaped by extensive public engagement, with residents and advisory groups playing an active role. Public art and lighting concepts were refined through dialogue, ensuring the bridge would reflect local identity and values. The result is a structure that belongs to the community in every sense.
Lighting Design
The architectural lighting was carefully planned to emphasize the sinusoidal rhythm of the arches, tracing their flowing form with delicate precision. Light was used to articulate the bridge’s unique curves and piers, creating a graceful presence over the highway after sunset. Designers also envisioned the bridge as a canvas for community celebration, incorporating opportunities for thematic and seasonal color displays. The design also considered concerns on light pollution, with minimized spill light from the structure.
Execution with Cutting-edge Architectural Lighting Solutions
To bring this vision to life, GVA Lighting supplied 200 linear meters / 669 linear feet of STR10® Color-Changing luminaires powered by an advanced 24 kW INFINITY® power supply system. These luminaires precisely highlight the arches and piers, accentuating the geometry while maintaining a balanced night presence. Integrated with COLOR-STREAM® and COLOR-AMP® technologies, the system provided the flexibility to deliver vibrant celebratory effects without sacrificing efficiency or reliability. The bridge now adapts seamlessly to community events, embodying both technical innovation and civic spirit.
A New Icon
The Sherwood Pedestrian Bridge is more than a passageway. By day, it is an elegant architectural structure with flowing curves. By night, it transforms into a dynamic centerpiece that celebrates Sherwood’s identity and aspirations. With its scheduled opening to the public on September 27, the bridge will serve as both a practical link and a symbol of connection, growth, and shared creativity for the City of Sherwood
