CIBC SQUARE is the new international standard of community. We are Toronto, redefined.

The first of its kind in Toronto (and beyond), CIBC SQUARE, 81 Bay Street, is a place where an integrated approach to personal well-being and green principles come together to meet and enhance your lifestyle. This building has obtained a LEED Platinum Core & Shell certification, a Well Health-Safety rating, and a Smart Score Platinum rating. This has earned it a reputation as one of the most intelligent and engaging places to work globally, as said in an October 2022 press briefing. Less than 40 buildings around the world have so far reached the SmartScore Platinum recognition, positioning CIBC Square in a very exclusive league of its own.

Through a partnership between Ivanhoé Cambridge and Hines, architects WilkinsonEyre and Adamson Associates designed 2 world-class towers totalling 3 million square feet that house an art program and an elevated park that is open to the public. CIBC SQUARE is designed to bring people together and offer exceptional, forward-thinking features and amenities. CIBC Square is also home to the newly constructed Union Station Bus Terminal and offers connections to other parts of Union Station. As a hub for regional GO Transit trains and buses, Via Rail intercity routes, the Union Pearson Express that services the city’s international airport, and a Toronto Transit Commission subway station, Union Station serves 300,000 daily commuters.

The design of CIBC Square was intended to stand out visually and optimize material usage. The tower’s unique 3D facades feature subtle folds that highlight the light interaction with the 12-story-high diamond patterns in the glass. GVA Lighting luminaires from the LIRA product line were custom-made to illuminate this project. Narrow beam angle optics were used in the LIRA luminaires to graze the beams that creates the distinct, aesthetic, glowing X effect encompassing and surrounding the exterior of the CIBC Square building.

CIBC SQUARE is redefining Toronto by creating much more than physical spaces. It was created with the belief that we have the responsibility to create an experience uniquely centered around humans to work, engage, and explore. CIBC SQUARE integrates wellness features for every sense—the air you breathe, the sounds you hear, the food and water we offer, the spaces you interact with, and the environment that surrounds you.

CIBC SQUARE is designed to deliver a healthier, greener, and more enjoyable environment to maximize the human experience and promote well-being. Sustainability is more than being green—it’s about people.
