Pont Neuf - Paris, France
Pont Neuf (New Bridge) is the oldest standing bridge in Paris, France. Comprising two spans across the River Seine at the western tip of the Île de la Cité. Pont Neuf was commissioned by King Henry III in 1578 and completed in 1607.
Designed by Jean Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau, the 232m / 761ft long bridge blends early Renaissance architectural styles with medieval functionalism. Its sturdy stone construction, wide roadways (22m wide), and semi-circular bastions introduced notable innovations in bridge design for the period. The bridge also features 381 Mascarons (stone masks) and the equestrian statue of King Henry IV, solidifying its status as an iconic Parisian landmark.
For this illumination project, The City of Paris, in collaboration with Lighting Designer Alain MAITRE (Citelum) and local partner ABAK, create a visual masterpiece using HIGHLIGHTER and STR10 luminaries running on INFINITY and COLOR-STREAM architecture. In total, GVA shipped:
- 510 linear meters (1667 linear feet) of HIGHLIGHTER GEN 4 color-changing in custom COVE-OUTDOOR configuration
- 210 linear meters (692 linear feet) of STR10 color-changing
- 44 kW centralized INFINITY® Power Supply System
Powered by GVA’s signature INFINITY®, COLOR-AMP® and COLOR-STREAM® technologies, the latest illumination design on this historic Parisian icon extends its aesthetics legacy in the City of Light – with liquid smooth dimming and transition effects, superior efficiency, and exceptionally long lighting runs.
This project marks a significant moment in GVA Lighting’s history, fulfilling the company’s dream of bringing the best the company can offer to the heart of Paris.
With the commissioning completed in preparation for the opening of Paris Olympics 2024, the bridge is a highlight among the charming Parisian backdrop during the greatest international sporting event in the history of mankind.
In 2026, Artist JR has transformed the Pont Neuf into “La Caverne du Pont Neuf,” a monumental inflatable cave stretching 120m / 394 across the oldest bridge in the city. Free and open to the public 24/7 through June 28, the installation pays tribute to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s iconic 1985 wrapping of the same bridge, with a soundscape by Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk).
