From a Coastal Fortress, to a Beacon of History
The defensive walls in Lagos trace their origins back over two thousand years, evolving from early Roman and Moorish fortifications into the substantial Muralha de Lagos seen today.
Mainly developed between the medieval period and the 16th century by Portuguese monarchs, these walls were built to protect the city’s vital maritime port. The surviving and restored sections still encircle much of the historic centre, serving as a major tourist attraction with scenic walks and panoramic viewpoints, and standing as a visible testament to Lagos’s layered history and its central role in Portugal’s seafaring traditions.
GVA Lighting is proud to have contributed to this project by providing STR9® series luminaires, which gently graze the historic walls and towers. This lighting installation enhances the presence of this ancient structure at night, reinforcing its significance as both a cultural landmark and a beacon of heritage.
